Chakngeaw Community

Ban Chak Ngaew, Old Chinese Community is the Tao Chew Chinese community which evacuated from mainland of China over hundreds of years ago. It is believed that the word “Chak Ngaew” derived and inaccurately pronounced from the original word of “Nong Cha Ngaew”. According to evidence found in Journey to Muang Klaeng (Nirat Muang Klaeng), the poem composed by Sunthorn Phu during his trip from Phra Nakhon to his hometown in Klaeng Sub-district, Rayong Province, in 1807, it is stated that “Arriving at Nong Cha Ngaew and staying overnight in the jungle here”. Currently, Ban Chak Ngaew, the old Chinese community, establishes the Ban Chak Ngaew Tourism Club in order to promote and restore the community to be the old Chinese-Thai cultural street. The highlight is the remaining old Chinese-style house and lifestyle. Pattaya Old Town Walking Street is opened daily from 03.00 p.m. to 08.00 p.m.. The locals sell various kinds of goods and local foods. In addition, tourists can also visit the house in the old Chinese style. Along the old town walking street, it connects many important locations such as Chao Mae Tubtim Shrine, Chinese opera house, ancient theatre and wood plant. Moon Festival or Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival is traditionally celebrated on the full moon day of the 15th day of the 10th waxing month. In this festival, the celebration table in ancient Chinese style is prepared for moon worship. There are also many performances, such as fan dance performance, lion dance performance, moon color changing performance and ancient Chinese opera, etc
